Question to the Mayor
Question number 0149/2008
Meeting date 30/01/2008
Question by Valerie Shawcross
What has been the reaction of London Councils to your proposals to seek planning powers to protect gardens from inappropriate developments?
Answer by Ken Livingstone (2nd Term)
As recently announced, I have asked officers to investigate how the planning system can be used to protect back gardens from inappropriate development. I remain committed to taking action on this issue, and will formally consult with London Councils when I am in a position to outline my specific proposals.
Question number 0549/2008
Meeting date 12/03/2008
Question by Valerie Shawcross
In my recent survey of Lambeth & Southwark residents:
· 85% wanted councils to be able to prevent development on gardens
· 73% wanted councils to be able to prevent conversions of family homes to flats
· 81% wanted councils to be able to prevent family homes being demolished and replaced by flats
When do you anticipate being in a position to outline your specific proposals on these issues and start formal consultation with London Councils?
Answer by Ken Livingstone (2nd Term)
GLA officers are already working on these issues in the context of the London Plan's objective to secure sustainable residential quality, with a view to addressing them initially in a revision to the Plan's Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance in 2007/8 and then in a subsequent review of the London Plan. The SPG revision process will include formal consultation with London Councils this autumn.
